Vintage African Indigo Robe Jacket - Primary Weave

This one of a kind robe is made from 100% cotton African Indigo fabric. This fabric originates from West African, and is handcrafted at all stages. From spinning raw cotton into yarn, to dying with natural indigo and then weaving, each step is done with skills honed over time. The fabric is woven into narrow strips, which are then sewn together with either a machine zig zag stitch or hand done whip stitch. These steps create a large rectangular piece of fabric.

Traditionally these fabrics would be used in West African households as clothing wraps, or used as an item for trade with outside communities. We've sourced these vintage textiles from a Los Angeles based, Malian born mother daughter duo who've been selling textiles in Los Angeles for decades.

We then take these vintage textiles and re-imagine them into one of a kind pieces of clothing in our studio, sometimes combining them with linen and vintage trims.

One of a kind item, handmade in our Los Angeles studio, ready to ship.

FABRIC & CARE

Hand wash cold, lay flat to dry. Wash with care, use gentle detergents. This garment is made from a handwoven (and therefore delicate) vintage textile. Pre-washed to reduce bleeding, however please wash separately from light colours

Please note that due to the vintage nature of these textiles there may be variations in weave, small repairs or stains and a general "worn/vintage" appearance. This also means they're incredibly soft and perfectly faded, something that can only be achieved through time and wear!
